Covid-19:1,112 dead, sharp drop in the number of new cases in Wuhan province, update on the epidemic

Every day there are dozens of news stories about the coronavirus. One thing is certain, the epidemic is continuing and the number of cases is increasing. In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) has just renamed the new Chinese coronavirus, which should no longer be designated by the acronym 2019-nCoV.

The latest report to date

As reported by the Hong Kong daily South China Morning Post On February 12, 2020, the latest assessment of the epidemic reports 44,794 confirmed cases for 1,112 deaths . In addition, a total of 4,657 patients have recovered from the disease. In Hubei province, China, where Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, is located, the number of new cases is falling. Indeed, there were 381 new cases on February 11 compared to 890 on February 3. This is therefore a 57% decrease over a little over a week. According to local researchers, the decline should be confirmed next week and the number of new cases should fall to zero around February 23.

Elsewhere in the world, no new deaths but a slight increase in the number of cases. With its 163 cases, Japan is still in second place , followed by Hong Kong (49 cases), which overtook Singapore (47). However, the stagnation of the epidemic seems to be confirmed just as well outside China for a few days.

A new temporary name

At a conference in Geneva, the coronavirus was renamed by the WHO, as reported by Le Monde this February 11. You should no longer say "2019-nCoV" but "Covid-19", an easier-to-pronounce name. However, this new name was decided on a provisional basis. Indeed, the study group of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), responsible for naming viruses, will not meet until May.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, also recalled that despite the fact that 99% of Covid-19 cases are in China, there is talk of a very serious threat for the rest of the world . The interested party therefore called on the States to show solidarity, in particular with regard to the sharing of data on the disease. The goal, according to him, is to save lives and stop the epidemic.
