Santé is a co-subsponsor of Team Continu:the skating team led by Marianne Timmer. Marianne shares a tip every day to keep fit with Santé. Today she explains why exercise is so important.
Marianne: 'According to the World Health Organization (WHO), all major western diseases (cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.) are favorably influenced by sport. And it certainly improves the quality of life.
Exercise has a direct influence on our fitness. In addition, it has a positive effect on our cholesterol level, bone density, blood pressure and sugar level. It is also important to prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. But exercise is also good for people who already suffer from a certain condition. It has a positive effect on the course of narrowed coronary arteries, diabetes, stroke, rheumatic complaints, anxiety and depression. Anyone who moves for at least half an hour every day can significantly reduce the risk of premature death.
In addition, exercise keeps your digestive system healthy. You have less chance of colon cancer because the digestive system functions better. Your intestines become more active and you perspire more effectively. As a result, you look less bloated. It is also slowly but surely becoming clear that exercise reduces the risk of breast cancer.
During exercise we burn nutrients. In addition, exercise has a number of beneficial effects on the body. A brief summary:the resting heart rate decreases, the muscles become stronger, the body weight decreases, the metabolism and bowel movements improve, the lungs absorb more oxygen, the joints remain flexible and mobile, the general resistance increases, bones become stronger, sleep improved and stress resistance increased. Moreover, exercise is also fun!'
