PIP implants have been shown to be non-toxic or carcinogenic and pose no long-term health hazard.
Research
This points to a large-scale survey conducted by the National Health Service (NHS). The Poly Implant Prothèses (PIP) have often been in the news, because French regulators found out that a different silicone gel than permitted was used for the manufacture of the PIP implants. This gel now appears not to be dangerous, but the chance of leakages from the implants of the French brand is twice as great.
Many wearers
In January of this year, the Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ) and the Dutch Association of Plastic Surgeons (NVPC) advised women with PIP implants to have the prostheses removed. In total, about 1,400 women were involved. There are approximately 400,000 wearers of the prostheses worldwide.
