Menstrual pain is very annoying. According to Womanizer and Lunette, there is something you can do about it:masturbate. A gynecologist explains whether it works.
Sex toy brand Womanizer and Lunette - a company that sells menstrual cups - conducted a three-month study with 486 respondents. The women, who suffered from abdominal cramps, bloating and tender breasts during their periods, stopped taking the painkillers. Instead, they masturbated regularly. And guess what? 70 percent of those surveyed said it reduced their pain.
But does it mean that 'menstrubation' – as Womanizer and Lunette call it – really works? Het Laatste Nieuws asked gynecologist Tom Bovyn. “A study of 486 people is not representative enough to present the result as fact,” he says. However, excitement can reduce other sensations, such as pain. “First of all, because the excitement distracts you from the pain. But also because after an orgasm extra blood flows to the genital area, the clitoris and other organs,” says Bovyn. Masturbating could also reduce cramps because endorphins are released after an orgasm. These hormones can act as a kind of pain reliever.
