Many people like to drink tea with a spoonful of sugar or honey. But what is actually the difference between the two? And which is healthier?
It may feel like honey is healthier than (granulated) sugar, but in reality there is little difference between the two. Honey is also a form of sugar; a mixture of glucose and fructose. It is broken down and digested in the same way in your body. Small difference:honey contains slightly more water than granulated sugar and honey contains slightly fewer calories.
The small amount of trace elements, minerals, vitamins and protein that honey contains is not enough to contribute to the total amount of these nutrients you get. Honey is often seen as healthier because it is a natural product. But that also applies to granulated sugar, which is made from sugar beets, for example. The Nutrition Center advises not to eat too much honey either.
