On Facebook you can indicate how you feel with your status. The emotion 'feeling fat' has been discredited and will be removed from Facebook in the English version.
#FatIsNotAFeeling
The Endangered Bodies group found the option unacceptable. 'With the status 'feeling fat' people who are overweight are ridiculed. Fat is not a feeling. Fat is a natural part of our body, regardless of your body weight.'
The emotion has been removed
Due to all the commotion that ensued, Facebook has removed 'feeling fat'. In the Netherlands, 'feel fed up' is still in the list of emotions.
Bigger problem than it seems
Several researchers are happy that Facebook has removed the option. Calling yourself fat doesn't seem like a big deal, but it does have downsides. Facebook completely ignores the underlying problems of people who feel fat, such as eating problems or a distorted body image. The more often you talk negatively about your body, the more difficult it becomes to maintain a healthy diet.
The most normal thing?
The 'feeling fat' status suggests that it is a very normal feeling that everyone has every now and then. That shouldn't be promoted.
