Tired of itching? Then the first thing you think about is scratching. We say:don't do it! Once you start scratching, the itching seems to only get worse. What can you do to ease the itching?
Scratching feels good when you're itching, but there are studies that show that scratching can actually make you more itchy. Do you want to try to prevent that? Soothe the itch? Then we have some tips for you.
Dry skin is more itchy. Lubricate your skin daily with a moisturizing cream. In addition, protect your skin against heat and cold, do not shower too hot and wear gloves when you clean.
Have you recently used a different detergent or a new shower gel? You may be hypersensitive to one of the ingredients. Try to avoid the ingredient alcohol in skin care products, which can be too aggressive for dry or sensitive skin. Try this hypo allergenic shower gel, for example.
For most home, garden and kitchen products there is no evidence of the anti-itch effect, but for many people they can at least temporarily relieve the itching:
Various anti-itch remedies are available over-the-counter at pharmacies. An ointment with lidocaine for example; lidocaine numbs the skin, making it less itchy. Ask your pharmacy for advice. Or use Nestosyl.
When itching is caused by an allergic reaction, histamine is released. In that case, you can use anti-histamines to get the allergic reaction under control.
If you really need to scratch, don't do it too hard. Scratch with a layer of clothing between your nails and the skin. Or squeeze, press or pat the skin gently instead of using your nails.
In some cases, itching is caused by a disease, infection or fungus. Itching can also be a side effect of a medication. A visit to the doctor can therefore not hurt if the itching does not go away.
