How bad is it to eat late at night? Science is not over it. One study states that it is better not to do it, but there is also a counterpart.
For the study, a group of male college students were given a 150-calorie snack rich in carbohydrates and proteins 30 to 60 minutes before going to sleep. Their metabolism accelerated as a result.
The same experiment was done with overweight young women. Their late night snack led to an improvement in blood pressure and metabolism. The study was not conducted on women with a healthy weight, but researchers do expect the same effect.
Whatever the test subjects ate, their metabolism improved. Nevertheless, it is best to eat a snack rich in proteins, the researchers conclude on the basis of other studies. Proteins help your muscles to recover at night.
According to the researchers, we shouldn't worry too much about the fixed times when we 'should' or shouldn't eat. If you know that you 'may' eat after dinner, it may even mean that you serve up a smaller portion during dinner.
