Headache, shortness of breath, fever and muscle aches. These are symptoms of parrot disease, which is becoming increasingly common in the Netherlands. Normally 40 to 80 cases of parrot disease are reported in our country, but recently six people have been infected in one week.
You can contract the parrot disease by inhaling dried poop from infected birds, this does not only have to be from parrots, other birds can also be culprits. Parrot disease is also known as psittacosis and can be transmitted from person to animal. The symptoms are similar to those of the flu, only this disease can cause severe pneumonia.

The GGD takes immediate action. It worries them that in a week six people have been infected. The GGD has launched an investigation into the origin of the disease. One may experience the symptoms worse than the other. For some it remains a flu and the other can even end up in hospital.
You can get the bacteria by simply breathing it in. The dust particles are in wandering bird droppings or snot. It is difficult to determine which bird is the culprit. It is often checked whether there has been an event related to birds recently. But even if you're behind that, it's still hard to get the sick bird out.
Do you notice that you have these symptoms? Please contact your GP as soon as possible.
