Afraid of the dentist? Who knows, you may soon have one fear less. A way has been discovered in which your teeth can repair cavities themselves.
Researchers believe they have evidence that a drug normally prescribed for Alzheimer's causes your teeth to make new dentin. Dentium (dentin) is the part inside the tooth. Your teeth already make it with an infection, but that is only a thin layer that is not enough to prevent deep cavities.
The researchers used the drug Tideglusib on a small sponge and inserted it into the hole. The tooth was able to recover and the sponge, made of collagen, dissolves on its own. It is not yet known when we can expect this way of filling cavities at our own dentist. The advantage is that the drug has already been tested against Alzheimer's, which saves time. But for the time being we probably cannot escape the dental drill.
