Would you like a nice drink in the evening, so that you fall asleep quickly? Error! Alcohol actually has a negative effect on sleep, especially for women. This is shown by research from the University of Michigan.
Especially for women, it well-known 'nightcap' not be a good move. Reduced sleep, interrupted sleep and restless sleep are just some of the effects of drinking alcohol before bedtime.
These conclusions arose from the recent research into the effect of alcohol consumption on sleep † The University of Michigan studied 93 adults (59 women and 34 men), all of whom were given an alcoholic snack or a placebo between 8:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. , after which it was checked how their night's sleep was.
Lower hours of sleep
Result? The women who had drunk alcohol in the evening appeared to sleep an average of twenty minutes less on a night of eight hours in total, than those who had not been drinking. In contrast to the men, the women also indicated that the quality of the nighttime sleeping hours was less. Men appear to break down alcohol faster † A consequence of the differences in physique, the researchers explain.
