This application analyzes the movement of your eyes to detect autism!

A French start-up says it has designed a simple and inexpensive app to detect autism. This innovation is based on recent research proving that the analysis of eye movements could allow the detection of certain cognitive disorders.

An application for professionals

Sibius is a young start-up based in Lyon. In a press release published by the Pulsalys incubator on November 28, 2019, mention is made of an e-health application based on artificial intelligence. This is intended to facilitate the detection of neurocognitive disorders such as autism. The secret of the application lies in the indirect measurement of visual attention as well as in the tactile exploration of an image. Sibius' goal is clear:to become the first neurocognitive marker intended for professionals for clinical advice in everyday medicine. The project leaders have indeed deplored the current absence of such markers.

For example concerning autism, in Europe, 4 years of wandering and uncertainty separate the moment when parents realize the first sign of alert and the official diagnosis made by an expert centre. In question, the lack of a simple marker to speed up decision-making said Guillaume Bezie, CEO of SIBIUS.

The application is based on recent research conducted by the Institute of Cognitive Sciences Marc Jeannerod. Scientists have demonstrated through "digitracking" that there is a perfect correlation between the movements of the eye and those of the finger exploring an image.

How is scouting done?

The potentially autistic patient uses a tablet on which there is an image including a face. However, when he passes his finger over the image, the touched areas become clear. This is the path naturally reproduced by the eyes . Thus, finger movements are recorded and analyzed by the application. According to the researchers, the autistic child will avoid the face to focus on other elements of the image.

Sibius also explained that using other analysis software and repositories, the app will diagnose other disorders . Examples include DYS disorders (dyslexia, dysorthographia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia), Alzheimer's disease and concussions.

Remember that autism causes behavioural problems . These include problems related to social skills, communication, senses (or motor control). However, it should be noted that up to half of those affected also suffer from intestinal problems. In April 2019, researchers determined that transplanting healthy gut microflora resulted in alleviation of symptoms autism.
