People who exercise by walking at their own pace burn fat most efficiently, according to researchers from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. The research team conducted their research on humans to determine the best method of oxidizing fat. Findings show that self-selected runs are the largest contributor to lipid (fat) energy production per distance traveled compared to imposed runs.
The scientists conducted this study because prescribing exercise doesn't appeal to people, because it keeps them on a strict schedule and doesn't provide immediate tangible benefits. “Our results show that to optimize fat oxidation as an energy source, it does not require a complex and restrictive exercise program,” said Fabien Basset, PhD, the corresponding author of this study.
The data supports the premise that walking at a self-determined pace daily should reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and more in the long term.
