A study of 23,000 adults by the Mediterranean Neurological Institute shows that those who eat hot peppers at least four times a week are 44 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. The risk of a stroke was reduced by 60 percent.

It was striking that the 'hot pepper eaters' generally had poorer health:they were overweight, had higher blood pressure and were more likely to suffer from conditions such as diabetes. Despite all this, they were less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Lead researcher Marialaura Bonaccio:“Actually, this group of people is said to be at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. But hot peppers have a protective effect.”
Whether this is really the case needs to be further investigated.
