Australian scientists have taken the term superfood to a new level. They grew a 'super banana'.
Source of Vitamin A The bananas are genetically modified and contain more beta-carotene than regular bananas. Beta-carotene is converted by the body into vitamin A. The super banana could therefore combat a vitamin A deficiency in African children.
Vitamin A deficiency
A vitamin A deficiency is one of the most common causes of blindness in Africa. Many children under the age of six die from a vitamin deficiency.
Long run-up
The first super bananas are on their way to America, where the first human trials will be held. Scientists hope the genetically enriched bananas of 2020 will grow on plantations in Uganda.
