Question: Last year I 'went through my knee'. After a week of bed rest, my knee joint was well turned by an orthopedist, and soon I was walking like a lapwing again. But last week I stumbled again. I got the same treatment. This time with referral to a physiotherapist to train the knee and meniscus. Is this the only possible treatment? And can you tell me the best way to start walking and moving again? J. VAN D., UTRECHT
Physiotherapist Jan Jorn van het Land answers: “Training the knee with a physiotherapist is a very good option to improve walking again. It is likely that your meniscus has been irritated or twisted. Now two things are possible. You will train your thighs at the physiotherapist to strengthen and stabilize your knee. The combination of strength, coordination and stability training is very important. If this does not give the desired result and you continue to suffer from the knee, you will have to go back to the orthopedist who can then use an MRI to see how bad the damage is in the knee. Depending on the result, a decision can be made to undergo keyhole surgery. Preventing surgery is always better, so I recommend that you train first and get treatment from a physiotherapist.”
