Less than ten months ago, Sander Simons, including former presenter of RTL news, told in Santé about his new love, his recently published book and his illness.
The lung cancer he was diagnosed with in February 2008, led to his death on January 5. After a battle of two years he decided on active euthanasia.
In De Telegraaf he explained his decision. “My fate is that I fall into a coma. Then others would have to decide my fate. I do not want that. All my life I have taken matters into my own hands, and now I am.”
In Santé Sander told that in addition to a lot of sadness, his illness has also brought him a lot of good † “When you are sick, people dare to express their love. Old fights don't matter anymore. I notice that I have become more sensitive, more open.” His illness also made him more open to love. “I am more sensitive, let my feelings play a more role in my life.” Sander met his wife a few months after the diagnosis.
