UK health services recently issued an alert. Indeed, intensive care has admitted several children who presented symptoms similar to those of Covid-19. If the number of children affected remains low, doctors are certain that it is another disease possibly linked to Covid-19.
Since the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic, children have been much less affected than adults. In reality, the youngest are often healthy carriers, that is to say asymptomatic. And yet, as several British media explain, including The Sun , the National Health Service (NHS) has just launched an alert across the Channel concerning the youngest.
According to local health authorities, there is talk of an inflammatory syndrome similar to toxic shock. However, this would be close to the severe version of Covid-19. Indeed, several children admitted to intensive care had fever, breathing problems but also severe abdominal pain. Patients also had intestinal disturbances, namely diarrhea and/or vomiting.
Authorities believe that this syndrome is also close to Kawasaki disease (or lymphocutaneous-mucous syndrome). It is a disease characterized by an impact on the heart and blood, the main symptom of which is the appearance of inflammation of the tongue. Some cases even presented with significant rashes on the hands. Remember that Kawasaki disease usually affects more Asian countries, especially Japan.
The United Kingdom expects to post a Covid-19 toll of more than 162,000 cases for more than 21,500 deaths . According to authorities, the syndrome claimed its first victims about three weeks ago, when the country was going through the peak of the coronavirus epidemic. However, no one knows if this mysterious syndrome developed during the Covid-19 epidemic or if it is only a rare disease.
“It is important that clinicians are made aware of any potential new links so that they can provide children and young people with the right care quickly” said NHS Director Simon Kenny.
If the syndrome has symptoms similar to those of Covid-19, there is still no clear link established between the two diseases. You should know that this syndrome is worrying insofar as several cases have emerged here and there in the country – with a majority in London – despite a number of cases considered low.
