How Nvidia's New AI Wants to Make Hospitals Smart

Will the hospital of tomorrow be smart? In any case, the Nvidia firm is working on an artificial intelligence capable of limiting the spread of infectious diseases. As the world currently battles Covid-19, this innovation currently being tested in dozens of hospitals can be useful in a variety of ways.

A device tested in 10,000 rooms

Known worldwide for its graphics cards, the American company Nvidia develops artificial intelligence (IA) for several years. In 2019, for example, the firm unveiled an AI capable of transforming a sketch into a realistic photo, but above all the Drive AutoPilot, an astonishing semi-autonomous driving system.

According to a statement released by Nvidia on May 14, 2020, the company has just developed Clara Guardian, an AI of a whole different kind. Indeed, the aim here is to limit the spread of infectious diseases in hospitals. The device is currently being tested in no less than 50 hospitals in several countries including China, Italy but also France. In total, AI is present in about 10,000 rooms!

Save time and limit staff exposure

The role of artificial intelligence is multiple. Indeed, the latter takes the temperature of the patients and monitors social distancing measures, all in real time. It can analyze videos and use automatic voice recognition to monitor patients' vital signs. AI thus makes it possible to automate certain tasks usually performed by human personnel. In other words, Clara Guardian gives caregivers the opportunity to save valuable time. Another important fact is that AI limits their exposure to disease.

For Nvidia, the AI could eventually expand its capabilities to help professionals a little more. Thus, for example, it is a question of providing assistance in surgical analysis or in the context of managing the progress of an operation. Anyway, Nvidia is formal:Clara Guardian can guarantee an environment with exemplary hygiene. This appears essential in reducing the risk of spreading infectious diseases.

In its press release, Nvidia also presented Clara Parabricks, a genomic sequencing software. However, the latter makes it possible to analyze the DNA sequence of the human genome in less than 20 minutes !

Nvidia also said it has collaborated with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States to develop disease detection AI models. This is to help research to study the severity of Covid-19 but also to develop new tools to better understand, measure and detect infections.
