According to the institute, many harmful substances are released in the vapor of e-cigarettes. For example, it contains nicotine, propylene glycol and traces of toxic and carcinogenic substances that have an adverse effect on health.
The knowledge institute cannot yet say how great the damage is to health. It often takes decades to see whether lung diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancer have developed. As a precaution, Trimbos thinks it would be better not to encourage the use of an e-cigarette.
State Secretary Blokhuis has already informed the House of Representatives in a letter that he has taken measures to combat the use of e-cigarettes. He will see if more needs to be done to discourage use.
