Smoking less and less popular in the Netherlands

Smoking less and less popular in the Netherlands

The Central Bureau of Statistics reports this on the basis of new figures from the OECD think tank, which has followed developments in 36 mainly Western countries.

Strong decline in the Netherlands

In 2017, 17 percent of people aged 15 or older were found to smoke every day. Ten years earlier, that percentage was still 23 percent. Internationally, the percentage fell from 23 to 18. Smoking is becoming less popular in the Netherlands, because in our country the decline went a little further, reports RTLnieuws.nl.

Most and fewest cigarettes

Greece and Turkey smoke the most cigarettes and smoke less in the United States, Canada, Sweden and Norway.

Government

The Dutch government even aims to reduce the number of smokers to 5 percent by 2040.
