Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the Netherlands and the number of skin cancer patients has increased at an alarming rate in recent years.
Over the past year, as many as 70,000 new cases have been added each year and this is expected to rise to 90,000 in ten years.

The main cause of the disease is excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun or tanning bed. The increase is mainly seen in older people because they have had more hours of sunshine than younger people.
The Integrated Cancer Center of the Netherlands advocates drawing up a national prevention plan to slow down the rapid increase in the number of patients with skin cancer.
