Melatonin pills with a dose above 0.3 milligrams can still be sold without a prescription.
The Health Care Inspectorate wanted to ensure that high doses of melatonin would only be available on prescription. The court in The Hague has decided that melatonin must remain freely available. The sale may only be refused after an individual assessment.
Melatonin is used for jet lag and other sleep disorders. The risk is that you will worsen sleeping problems if you use the pills incorrectly. Doctors say they are seeing more and more patients with sleep problems who take melatonin on their own and are extra tired due to improper use.
