Where do those annoying belching come from?
What is heartburn? Stomach acid is an acidic liquid that digests food in your stomach. Each stomach is lined with a mucus layer. Your esophagus doesn't have that protective layer. Normally, the junction between the stomach and the esophagus is closed. This passage only opens briefly as soon as you eat or drink. If stomach acid then flows into the esophagus, this can cause problems. The most common complaint is a burning sensation behind the sternum (heartburn).
