You use up to 30,000 more calories per year if you stand for three extra hours a day. According to Mike Loosemore of London's University College Hospital, standing burns almost a calorie per minute. This is over four kilos per year.
Some tips for standing more
- Ask your boss for a desk that you can stand behind and alternate sitting and standing.
- Walk to someone more often instead of emailing or calling.
- Do you have to make a phone call? Walk back and forth while calling.
- From now on, do as many things as possible that you do while standing.
- Do not sit at your desk during the lunch break and do not plop down in the cafeteria, but go outside for a walk.
