Clocks go back one hour this weekend. Great, we can sleep an hour longer, but what effect does that have on our body?
Quality of sleep
In 2013, a UK survey found that the quality of our sleep improves with the start of winter time. We feel happier and more energetic.
Short-lived
Unfortunately, that positive effect does not last long. Soon we sleep worse than before winter time started. As the days get shorter, it's easier to go to bed early and stay in bed longer, causing us to toss and turn in bed.
Suppose…
Suppose we had to keep one time all year round, should that be winter or summer time? Researchers disagree on that.
Out with daylight saving time
There is a researcher who argues for winter time all year round, because this is the original time, to which our biological clock is adjusted. If we were to abolish winter time, it would be dark for an extremely long time in the winter in the morning and we would need daylight to get going in the morning.
Away with winter time
According to another researcher, it is better to abolish winter time. It would be better for our health, because we are outside longer during the summer due to the abundance of daylight.
