There is a lot of discussion in Brussels about the end of winter and summer time. Will we never change the clock again from next year?
Daylight saving time was originally set to save energy. It stays light longer and therefore less energy is consumed. An international poll was recently conducted and found that the majority of the 4.6 million voters are in favor of permanent daylight saving time. So never change the clock again.
Are we really going to stop changing the clock?
Following the results of the survey, a committee in Brussels is working on a plan to stop the clock movement. For the time being, countries would be allowed to choose for themselves winter or summer time. A decision must be made by March 2019 at the latest. This means that the EU Member States would then have to indicate whether they opt for permanent summer time or permanent winter time.
What does the Netherlands choose
The choice has yet to be debated in the Netherlands. The survey shows that a majority of people voted for permanent daylight saving time. However, not everyone thinks this is a good idea. In addition, it is also possible that an unambiguous choice for winter or summer time is made within the EU.
The disadvantages of daylight saving time
Forever Daylight Saving Time may seem attractive because of the long summer evenings, but in winter it wouldn't get light until 10 a.m. There is also a greater chance that people will go to bed later, because it stays light for longer, which has adverse effects on health.
The disadvantages of winter time
In contrast, research was conducted in 2013 into the number of accidents and this showed that more accidents occur during the evening rush hour during winter time.
In short, politics still has a lot to discuss. The Ministry of the Interior has announced that it will soon provide an initial response.
