Mysterious Gene Hip and waist circumference was measured on 224,000 people. Subsequently, areas associated with an apple or pear shape were searched for. This resulted in dozens of spots, several of which were close to one gene.

Then biomedical scientists switched off the gene in question in zebrafish and looked at how those zebrafish store fat compared to zebrafish that do have the gene. The fish in which the gene did not work gained less belly fat. In addition, their fat cells were smaller. Small fat cells reduce the risk of disease in people.
