When you fart, it's often Russian roulette!
Is there going to come out a light, odorless wind or a horrible, nauseating gust?
Why do my farts sometimes no smell …
…and that other times I'm afraid of making a hole in the ozone layer?
Well, Dr. Myron Brand, an American gastroenterologist, explains what makes some of our flatulence so foul-smelling.
According to this gastroenterology specialist, the stench of our farts varies depending on what we eat .
Here is what Dr. Brand explains:
“A bad smell is not a bad sign. It's just a consequence of what you eat and what your bacteria are doing in your digestive tract.
"From this point of view, we are all different. A strong odor simply indicates that the carbohydrates you consume are poorly absorbed by your body — and therefore have fermented.”
Know that it is not because you eat badly that your farts smell worse.
In fact, it's quite the opposite! Yes, the more healthy foods you eat, the more your farts are likely to stink.
Why ? Because high fiber foods such as broccoli, cabbage and quinoa stimulate gut bacteria, which produces a lot more gas .
Be aware that proteins also cause particularly smelly farts.
So you can be sure that all those muscular show-offs in the gym produce a lot of methane...
Moreover, scientifically speaking, farts are not made of methane, but of hydrogen sulphide.
If you've ever been to hot springs or near a volcano, you'll surely know that characteristic smell of rotten eggs.
Dr. Brand concludes:
“Some people produce methane, and others produce hydrogen sulfide, which makes flatulence smell like rotten eggs. It all depends on what you ate before.”
Fun fact:on average, a person farts between 10 and 20 times a day !
And in case you doubted it, Franky Vincent, the Georges Brassens of the West Indies, confirms it to us in song;-)
