The arrival of robots and artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine raises fears of a loss of human values. On the contrary, some believe that the machines could relieve doctors and other staff so that they can better support patients.
Between robot surgeons and predictive AI research (cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, etc.), medicine is taking a path that some don't appreciate really. Just as robots generally raise fears of a decline in jobs, they also raise questions about health. But according to a recent article published by the MIT Technology review, AI could finally make medicine more human.
Is this a paradox? The publication developed in partnership with GE Healthcare is a synthesis of the opinion of 900 professionals in the sector . The fact is that most of these experts are in favor of the development of this kind of technology in medicine.
According to the results, approximately 80% of respondents believe that AI has already reduced the burnout of healthcare workers. It is mainly about administrative tasks, usually taking up about 10% of the working time of professionals. We should also mention the fact that 45% of them noted a longer patient consultation time . For respondents, artificial intelligence frees up time for doctors to spend more time with their patients. It is true that the patients present in the hospital do not often see their doctor, and when he visits them, it is a very limited time.
For some, AI can make medicine more effective, as it can in other fields. However, others are not of the same opinion and believe that we should not go too fast. For example, it is a question of avoiding the appearance of errors that are difficult to detect and which may expose patients to danger. In addition, faced with what looks like a race for progress in AI, global authorities should still consider regulation, even if it means slowing down this development for greater security.
