As part of the National Health Nutrition Program (PNNS), since 2007, the law has required advertisers to mention health messages in their advertisements such as this for example: "For your health, avoid eating too much fat , too sweet, too salty" . And yet, an American study published in the proceedings of the American Academy of Sciences (PNAS) these days, has just shown that eating sugar promotes a good relationship between a couple!
Sugar softens morals, this is the conclusion of this study conducted for 21 days among 107 married couples by Brad Bushman, professor of communication and psychology at Ohio State University (USA). A priori, depending on the level of glucose in our blood, our reactions will be different:the less there is and the more aggressive we will be, the more glucose there is, the more conciliatory we will be, especially with the loved one !
For the duration of the experiment, the blood sugar level of Mr. and Mrs. was recorded each evening, and the couples at the same time recorded their satisfaction with their relationship on a daily basis.
This last impression was measured in a rather playful way since they had to push pins into a voodoo doll according to their level of aggression towards their spouse!... And so, it was found that the more the level of blood glucose was low plus they had driven a significant number of needles into the doll.
By extension, the authors of this study conclude that hunger harms good social and marital relations since it makes you aggressive and can lead to domestic violence for lack of self-control due to a lack of energy, it is to say in sugar.
Other studies have shown, of course, that consuming too much sugar is a threat to public health since it leads to an increase in diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer ...causing more than 35 million deaths each year worldwide.
It is especially the most disadvantaged populations who are concerned because the cheapest products are often stuffed with fructose used as an additive. In this form, fructose would also have toxic effects on the liver similar to those of alcohol, and would also cause addiction.
We have established, in France, a tax on sugary drinks, we have also prohibited the difference in added sugar content mainly in dairy products and drinks, between mainland France and the DOM-TOMs. But unfortunately, you should know that the lobby of the sugar industry exerts weighty pressure on the public authorities :let's not forget that the "Taste Week" is financed by the sugar industry.
However, there is no question of doing without sugar since it is part of our necessary daily nutritional intake, but it is better to avoid white sugar, composed almost exclusively of sucrose, in processed foods (flavored sweet yogurts) and prefer whole brown sugar which has kept its vitamins, fibers and minerals, to be added to plain yoghurt!
