Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year

But what a bullshit that is. Because a British psychologist has decided (with a formula!) that this is the most depressing day of the year, we all fall back into a melancholy mood, because it is Blue Monday.

When is it Blue Monday?

Some say… it is the Monday of the last full week of January. But opinions differ on that, read below why. According to others, Blue Monday is a week earlier and that would be today. The depressing day of the year is.

WTF? Shall we only have Blue Monday for a week or something?

The fact that there may be some disagreement about which day is really Blue Monday, perhaps because this Blue Monday is only on the Monday of the last full week of the month, if the salaries have not yet been paid. Because when these have been paid out, everyone is in a Hallelujah mood and it is no longer a depressing day, you see? It is therefore decided in advance to move the most depressing day forward by a week.

Why the last Monday?

The fact that the Monday of the last full week of January is normally called Blue Monday has several reasons:

  • Happy holidays are over (I say hooray!)
  • The weather is cold and inclement (Why? The days are getting longer!)
  • Spring and summer are yet to come (in March we can often sit outside again)
  • All New Year's resolutions have already been thrown overboard (I've only just started!)
  • The holiday is still far away

Personally, I think it's all a bit exaggerated and I think we get too carried away by all the media attention around it. Of course I do not want to indicate that I do not believe that someone can have depression or burnout. But to attach that to a specific day of the year is going too far for me.

Who actually invented Blue Monday?

British psychologist Cliff Arnall is blamed for creating this day and this formula, which dates back to 2005.

Well Cliff, thank you!

What can you do to survive this depressing day?

Numerous tips are given here and there to get through this depressing day. You can't think of it that crazy, or you can surrender to it. From eating chocolate all day and working in snacks to sitting on the couch and binge watching.

And you think it will make you feel better? No way!

Best Blue Monday tip ever

I'm not a know-it-all, not a psychologist and I haven't studied for these kinds of things, but I do know one thing for sure. This is the best tip you will read to quell any emerging feeling of misery specifically on this Blue Monday day.

So I suggest you gather all your courage and apply this tip if you feel the slightest bit of Blue Monday Blues coming on, or tears running down your cheeks of self-pity.

KICK YOUR ASS!

And stop letting things talk to you that aren't there. It's just a Monday in January. We are on our way to spring (I admit, it will take a while, but still), so that's nice too. Look outside! With a little luck the sun will shine. Or not. It is undoubtedly cold, but you can also think that it is nice and fresh. A glass half-empty or glass half-full case. Healthy weather. Take a walk and take a deep breath in and out! That only works.

Hide yourself under the covers? Do not overreact! Why would you hide under the covers on that particular day? That's what you do when you're having a really shitty day, for whatever reason. And everyone has such a day, but not all on Blue Monday. Listen to yourself and not to the bullshit of a psychologist trying to fill his own practice with Blue Monday idiots 😉 .
