The Health Council recommends offering specific groups of patients with a severe immune disorder an extra dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as part of the primary vaccination series.
An example of people with a disturbed immune system are transplant patients. According to the Health Council, they have an insufficient immune response to a full vaccination against COVID-19.
Who qualifies for a third shot is determined in the Netherlands by the RIVM.
The Council also advises to make preparations to give other groups a 'booster vaccination' as soon as the effectiveness of the vaccine against serious illness. This is not the case at the moment.
