Suddenly you feel warm, your skin turns red, your heart starts beating faster. And once a hot flash is over, you're left sweaty. Hot flashes are often associated with menopause, but there are other reasons that can cause you to have a hot flash.
1. Medicines
Do you get hot flashes while just starting a new drug? It could be a side effect of your medication. Check the package leaflet or contact your doctor. In some cases, hot flashes will subside once your body gets used to the drugs.
2. Overweight Being overweight can mess up your metabolism and in some cases cause hot flashes. Eating healthier and exercising more can provide relief.
3. Allergy or hypersensitivity If you are allergic or sensitive to a certain food, it can cause a hot flash. Alcohol and caffeine are two common triggers, but they can also be found in other foods. If you suspect that your hot flashes are caused by food, try journaling to discover the connection.
4. Stress or anxiety If you suffer from stress, anxiety or panic, this can provoke a physical reaction. In such a case, pay extra attention to your breathing. Meditation and yoga can also help control hot flashes caused by stress, anxiety or panic.
5. Medical With the flu, you can experience hot flashes. Hormones (pregnancy) or a problem with your thyroid can also cause you to get hot.
6. Bedroom too warm Your body temperature varies at night. It can therefore happen that you wake up sweating. If it is a recurring pattern, it could be that your bedroom is too warm or that you are using too many blankets.
