Due to an allergy, diet or principles, more and more people are eating gluten-free bread. Unfortunately, the bread often turns out to be unhealthier than we would like to believe.
Too salty The Consumers' Association investigated ten types of gluten-free bread, seven of which contain too much salt. The gluten-free sunflower kernel breads from manufacturer Schär were 56 percent saltier than is permitted for normal bread.
Missing guidelines
There are guidelines for how salty your bread can be. Gluten-free bread, however, does not fall into the category of bread, but that of special foods, which means that no maximum amount of salt has been set. Because nothing is laid down in the law, manufacturers are officially doing nothing wrong.
Errors on the labels
The labels were incorrect at one manufacturer. For example, the packaging indicated that there is 2.5 grams of fat in the brown bread, in reality that was 6 grams. The number of calories was a quarter higher than indicated on the packaging.
Less salt The consumer association has been campaigning for less salt in food since 2007. Although the manufacturers are not doing anything wrong under the law, the consumer association believes that they should take their responsibility instead of taking advantage of this loophole.
