Although the e-cigarette is sometimes recommended as a smoking cessation aid, research now indicates otherwise. If the e-cigarette were to help with smoking cessation, the effect would be very small.
E-cigarette smokers don't quit more often
Before the start of the study, 949 smokers were asked how much they smoked and whether they intended to quit. Of those who smoked an e-cigarette, had stopped after a year no more than the regular smokers.
E-cigarette maintains habit
Pulmonologist Wanda de Kanter is not surprised by the result. 'With an e-cigarette you maintain the habit of smoking, which can make it more difficult to quit.'
