People with anorexia have a distorted view of their bodies. Recent research shows that they even act as if they are fatter than they actually are.
Port
For the study, a gate that could be made wider or narrower was used. The participants were given a task that had nothing to do with the study. They didn't know that it actually looked at what width of the gate people started turning their shoulders to get through.
What turned out?
Healthy people turned their shoulders when the gate was 25 percent wider than their own shoulders. People with anorexia already turned their shoulders to narrow when the port was 40 percent wider than their own shoulders.
Unconsciously
Also subconsciously people with anorexia experience their bodies as wider, while that is not the case. The outcome of this research can be used in therapy against anorexia.
