Increase in Dutch female GPs

38 percent of general practitioners in the Netherlands are women. Within five years that will be more than half. This is apparent from the NIVEL GP registration.

The number of general practitioners in the Netherlands has increased by 16 percent in the past ten years † However, there is a big difference in growth between men and women. The registration shows that in that period the number of female general practitioners has almost doubled , while for men there was a decrease of 6 percent.

This growth will only continue, because no less than 70 percent of GPs in training are women † As a result, in 2015 more than half of the general practitioners will be women.

An additional consequence is that the number of GPs working in part-time further increases. In 2009, 86 percent of female GPs were already working part-time, compared to 41 percent of men.
