You may have noticed your friends posting red hearts on their Facebook.
The purpose of these little red hearts is to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
But a woman on Facebook made an apt point about it:
"Are these hearts posted on Facebook really the solution to saving lives?"
This woman's name is Erin Chieze and on her Facebook she posted a picture of lemons showing exactly what breast cancer eye and touch can look like.
And, unsurprisingly, this photo was a hit. Here it is:
In reaction to all these red hearts, she explained the importance of showing these lemons to as many people as possible.
"In December 2015, when I saw a mark on my breast that looked like one of these images, I knew immediately that I had breast cancer," she wrote.
“I tried to locate my tumor but it was not palpable. 5 days later, the cancer was diagnosed and reached stage 4 the following months.
A heart wouldn't have helped me much to detect that I had cancer.
Of course, I knew what breast cancer was. I knew all the self-exams.
But a picture of what to look for helped me detect that I had a life-threatening condition. »
She continues, “We all need real information, and less cute little hearts.
If I hadn't seen this photo with some handy information, I wouldn't have known what to look for.
So be nice. No need to put hearts everywhere! Instead, share tips that really help people. »
Erin decided to take matters into her own hands and publish her touching story.
She wanted to do something to help save lives, like this picture did for her.
This photo is part of a campaign against breast cancer called "know your lemons", launched by the organization Worldwide Breast Cancer.
It is an educational image that all women should know and share in order to be able to examine themselves and, in some cases, save their lives.
“If you really want to help people who are suffering from cancer or who will have to face cancer, share photos like this,” Erin finally said.
