1. We choose our essential oils

Before you start, learn that all essential oils can be used in the composition of a perfume.

You can choose them according to the smell they give off, the well-being they give you, but also according to the virtues they possess.

A pleasant and subtle fragrance will feature a blend of oils from 3 categories:base, middle and top notes. Plus a few drops of sage for fixative.

- The base notes are the oils that will stabilize your perfume, the base. You can choose between these scents that come from bark, roots, resins:sandalwood, incense, cedar, myrrh, cloves, cinnamon, vetiver...

Know that it will be the smell that remains last on your skin.

- The top notes are the character of the perfume that one can choose dynamic, sparkling, flowery or fresh. We smell them first, they are more citrus or coniferous:lemon, mandarin, orange, grapefruit, bergamot, verbena...

- The heart notes bring harmony between the base and the head, it is the essence of flowers:rose, geranium, ylang-ylang, lavender, jasmine...

There, for the choice... it's according to taste! One or two oils from each category, you have to imagine a mixture depending on whether you like fruity, citrus, musky...

2. We choose the bottle and the base

An ideal perfume preparation bottle is made of tinted glass and can hold 250 ml of liquid. The first thing is to make sure that it is perfectly clean, by sterilizing it.

Bottles of old perfumes, cologne or hydrogen peroxide can be recovered, as long as it is not transparent, so that the light does not alter the mixture.

If you don't have one, it can be easily found in Casa or Maison du Monde type stores, or more easily on the Internet.

You now choose the base of your product:will it be a perfume or an eau de toilette?

A perfume will be stronger and more concentrated, an eau de toilette lighter. So there are two bases different to choose from:

- If you want to make a perfume, you pour 100 ml of 70° alcohol into your bottle (found in pharmacies or directly online here).

- If you prefer to obtain an eau de toilette, put instead 250 ml of 70° alcohol or a mixture of 150 ml of 70° alcohol and the rest of floral water (rose floral water or sage floral water) .

3. We mix it up!

How to Make Your Own Custom Perfume?

There, of course, there are basic recipes, but your imagination and your tests will be your best assets.

You might try several blends before you find the one you like! It's up to you to turn yourself into a "nose"!

Mix 5 to 15 ml of each oil of your choice, depending on the smell you want, more or less persistent. I give you examples :

- For a feminine fragrance with floral notes: 7 ml of geranium + 4 ml of verbena + 3 ml of cedar. Add 20 drops of rose oil and fix with 5 drops of sage.

- For a more oriental feminine fragrance :we rather mix 10 ml of sandalwood with 5 ml of cedar. Then add 5 drops of sage to fix and a few drops of lemon and ylang-ylang.

- A masculine scent ? In this case we replace lemon or ylang-ylang with nutmeg, for example...

4. We are patient!

Afterwards, we do a small test on a part of your skin. And once satisfied with the result, you will need to protect your bottle from light and heat for 4 weeks. This is so that the different scents mix well.

At the end of the 4 weeks, filter your perfume (a coffee filter is perfect). Then pour it into the bottle of your choice (also sterilized). It will keep as long as a ready-made perfume.

5. And we carefully keep its formula

Don't forget to note the formula of your little mix, because if it's successful... you'll want to do it again. I wrote everything down on a dedicated notepad like a big nose would.

Also remember to give it a name. Realize that you probably have a unique scent there. Yours!

A pretty name written on a beautiful self-adhesive label that you decorate, with a bottle of your choice... Like a real perfumer!

I'll tell you about mine. As we know each other well, now I can tell you my little secrets! I managed to create a scent that looks a bit like "Opium ", which I love:full-bodied, spicy, sensual and intoxicating... So I called it "Bewitchment ". Do you like it?

Bonus tip

In order to correctly measure the quantities of oils, get small syringes in pharmacies! Otherwise, for indication:20 drops make 1 ml, 1 teaspoon represents 5 ml and a tablespoon 20 ml.

Savings achieved

A 100ml eau de toilette costs on average €50. Some brands go up to €80 for 50 ml!

250 ml of alcohol at 70° costs €1.80, an alcohol + floral water mixture €5.20. Essential oils come back to you on average for each recipe at €1.50. Flasks can be collected.

Or a 250 ml eau de toilette made for €6.70! If you use 2 bottles per year, you save more than €86 annually!

Obviously, you can fumble a bit and have a few hiccups, but even if you get it wrong twice, you'll still save over $72. At that price, have fun!
