Finally, after about 20 months after my skiing accident, I succeeded today for the first time:running without pain. Well, maybe running is a big word… let's just jog .
I have tried several times to start running again. I used to 'just' run 13-15 kilometers in a row, lately I was already out of running after running 200 meters due to pain in my knee. Of course the cause is known, the tearing of my cruciate ligament with skiing. Basically, I've also been told that running isn't good for me. However, the wish remains. Not that I'm such a huge sports fan, but a little exercise wouldn't hurt of course. In addition, the kilos are too easy to hang around my body and I like to use my time wisely. That's why I like working out at home so much. That's why I still try to run when I go out for a walk.
I have to rebuild everything very slowly, of course. A few weeks ago I went for a run with Frank for the first time. I had my own knee brace on in the hope that it would allow me to run without pain. Even then I always alternated running with walking, so as not to force anything and to build up slowly. Unfortunately without success, the pain remained.
This morning I made an attempt for the first time with the PHYSIOstrap Sport that was sent to me. Hoping to see if I could run without pain. The PHYSIOstrap Sport from Epitact is a lightweight aid that helps with kneecap disorders, pain complaints and a jumper's or runner's knee. Anyway, worth a try I thought. Although my own brace does not provide the desired result, I wanted to give it another try.
Let me first say that this Physiostrap is a lot more pleasant to wear than the brace I have myself. It is made of super thin material and therefore fits under my running tights. How nice is that? You are undoubtedly wondering how this is possible. So thin and yet a protection for your knee while running so that you can make the miles without pain. I certainly do.
Now I have tackled 2 things differently than in my previous attempts. So I used the Physiostrap and I took a route with an unpaved road.
In any case, the elastic silicone strap ensures that the Physiostrap does not fall down while running, which is already very nice. You can easily put it on and off and there is extra reinforcement around the knee.
The combination of the dirt road and the Physiostrap ensured that I was able to finish my run without pain. And yes… it was still a lot of switching between running and walking. 40 minutes over 4 kilometers is of course not a real top performance, but of course I have to rebuild and I was actually quite happy with this.
