Giving your child a pillow is not something that is necessary. However, many children would like to have a children's pillow at some point. Of course you decide when such a pillow comes, and not your child. But from what age can you actually start with a children's pillow and what should you pay attention to?
You can start on a children's pillow from the age of about 2-3 years old. Certainly not before, because then using a pillow is not safe. With your baby you have also clearly looked at which baby mattress you should buy and now it is important that you pay attention when purchasing the first pillow for your child. Children who are not yet able to turn their heads well enough run the risk of suffocation.
This is no longer the case from 2 years old and then your starting toddler can appreciate some form of support. At home I noticed that Noud felt the need when I went to see him in the evening. Then he had put his bear under his head and used it as a pillow. Obviously that is not a good alternative, even if it looks cute old. Your child's posture will not improve if he lies on his cuddly toy.
Especially with children who sleep on their side, a children's pillow offers a supporting function. Children who sleep on their backs don't really need this for support yet, but they probably already like it. In any case, it is time for me to look for a pillow for my toddler.
There are a number of things you should pay attention to with the children's pillow:
Now Noud is a bit older and then it can certainly be wise to start with a pillow to support the head and neck. It is not recommended to pass on a pillow to your child that is originally suitable for adults. A child needs a pillow that is appropriate for his physique. A pillow that is used for adults is much too high for a child. There are also different pillows for different ages. You can take this into account when purchasing it.
We got a 'my first pillow' from 'Silvana' for Noud to see what he thinks about it. Silvana started developing and producing pillows thirty years ago. They have now expanded that with a collection of good duvets, but we will start with the children's pillow.
'My First Pillow' is a soft pillow that has been specially developed for children from two years. That means a thin children's pillow that sufficiently supports your child's head but does not push it up. The latter is an important feature that many parents forget to pay attention to. From 5-6 years old you can then switch to another pillow that suits the older children better.
What's nice is that the pillow is washable at 60 degrees Celsius! In addition, you can breathe through the pillow and it is completely anti-allergic. A washable pillow, that doesn't sound wrong, does it. I personally find that a great advantage with any runny noses and running ears. The pillow has a size of 60×70 cm, which I initially thought was a bit large. Noud has a small duvet that also comes with a smaller pillowcase, so I had to buy it separately elsewhere. So keep that in mind!
The little boy sleeps wonderfully on it! His head doesn't sink into it, which I was afraid of at first. He is very proud of his big boy kisses. When he comes to our bedroom in the morning, he now takes his own pillow with him to lie between us for a while. That is also a nice bonus, so that nothing is stolen anymore. And then he yells… Nice kisses, isn't it, mama? I big boy.
Yes darling, you are a very big boy, and I am very proud of you!
There are of course several companies where you can go for a first children's pillow. If you pay attention to the points of purchase as indicated above, you can go to:
