I find it one of the hardest things to make a choice, a new mattress. Because even though I lie in bed every night on the mattress I'm used to, if you ask me what kind of mattress makes me happy and what makes me comfortable? Then I can't just give you an answer to that. Because how exactly do you choose a good mattress? Which brand stands out for you? Which type of mattress is best? What should you pay attention to if you have certain complaints? And what do you actually like lying down? I'll help you on your way with a few tips.

Have you ever done a 'test lie' when choosing a mattress? We recently did it in a bed store. We lay there on five mattresses to feel which one we liked best. Five mattresses doesn't seem like much at all, but I still lose the thread a bit. We have tried all five mattresses at least 4 times with trial lying. With and without duvet 😉 and always with the same pillow. Everything to of course try to choose a good mattress when we are ready. But I'm still undecided. Because of my back problems, I am in any case looking for mattresses that are good for your back, such as those from Allnatura. Because back pain can really be very annoying for your night's sleep.
Besides the pain in my back, I also regularly suffer from my shoulders. Not when I lie on my side, which I do regularly, but precisely because I often lie on my back and then with my arms above my head. A bit of a strange position, and not ergonomically sound. I inherited this attitude from my mother, who always slept like this. Although I also realize that this attitude only started with me when I went through menopause. Not entirely voluntarily, but probably simply because I was too hot. Did you know that your sleeping position also has a lot to do with choosing the right mattress? You can read more about sleeping positions here.
Are you ready for a new mattress? Then keep the tips below in mind when choosing it! Because what is a good mattress? That may just be different for you than for your partner. Or your neighbor 😉 .
Of course you adjust the length and width of the mattress that you are going to choose to your own height and that of your partner (if any). You also adjust the width to your own posture, but also to your own needs. For example, after the transition, the need arose for me to have more space in bed. A wider mattress is useful.
If you get hot quickly, then a mattress with pocket springs, for example, is smarter to choose than a mattress that only consists of cold foam and memory foam. Pocket springs ventilate better and are also more moisture permeable. Are you a real cold-blooded person? Then you can consciously choose a mattress made of cold foam and memory foam.
There are mattresses that are specially made of anti-allergenic material. Which is great if you're allergic to anything and everything.
Are you a back sleeper or a stomach sleeper, then you often benefit from a mattress that is medium to hard. If you usually sleep on your side, it is smart to choose a mattress that supports the contours of your body well.
There are also options for people who want to make sustainable choices and who prefer to use only natural materials. For example, Allnatura has natural fiber mattresses made of coconut, coconut horsehair or hemp. And there are even vegan mattresses available. It's great that you can also implement your convictions as a vegan when choosing a mattress.
Normally, a good mattress needs to be replaced between 8-10 years. If you already have certain complaints when sleeping, or if you are no longer comfortable on your mattress, you can also opt for a topper. You then place this on your mattress, so that you can continue to use your own mattress, but still have a different sleeping experience.
As I said, we recently had a 'test location' in a bed shop. But I find it almost impossible to make the right choice there. Yes, of course you can feel whether you are comfortable or not on a certain mattress. But I don't think you can really say anything about it until you've slept on it for a week. So when choosing a new mattress, don't go too fast. Be well informed and in any case choose a mattress that you can also try at home and return if you really don't like it.
Good luck!
