During a long flight you would prefer to sleep, but that is easier said than done. How do you ensure that you can still sleep on the plane?
Travel and Leisure asked a researcher from the American National Sleep Foundation. If flying business class isn't an option, these are her tips:
When you doze off, you wake up more easily. That also applies if you are a good sleeper. Try to avoid being awakened by noise during that sleep phase. Preferably wear earplugs or a noise-canceling headset.

Adjust the time on your watch and your phone. That will help you adjust to the time zone of your destination. More tips against jet lag.
That after dinner dip might help you doze off. Your body is used to dinner and a few hours before bed. Another advantage is that you don't have to stay awake until you get a meal on the plane.
Think of earplugs, noise canceling headphones, a sleep maker and/or a neck pillow.

Melatonin is the hormone your body produces at bedtime. A low dose of melatonin can help you sleep during the flight.
Don't fall into the nightcap trap. Alcohol can actually have a stimulant effect, making it more difficult to fall asleep.
Do you know that it is difficult or impossible to sleep on the plane? Book a flight that lands at the destination in the evening. You can then go to bed on time after arrival and that helps you adjust to the new time zone. Hopefully the next day you will start your holiday rested.

Many people simply do not sleep well on an airplane. That is part of it and you will have to pay for that for a (distant) holiday.
