Sometimes children come to the emergency room where burn care at home has not gone well.
The clothing and diaper should be removed as soon as possible in the event of burns. That has now been added to the guidelines for burn care. Parents do cool their child, but do not always take off the clothes and diaper.
Preferably, the cooling takes place at the same time as the undressing, which is why it has been combined in one first aid rule. The clothing and diaper trap heat and can therefore make a burn worse. By undressing a child, the burns are also easier to see and cool. Cool a burn for ten minutes with lukewarm soft running water.
The previous first aid rules were drawn up after the disaster in Volendam. They therefore mainly focused on first aid for burns caused by fire.
