Pregnant?
The government advises pregnant women of all ages who live within 100 kilometers of a nuclear power plant, as the crow flies, to also have iodine tablets at their disposal. This way you can protect your unborn child. Are you pregnant? Then you can buy the iodine tablets from 9 October 2017 at a pharmacy and drugstore, recommended price:€ 2.95.

Why are the iodine tablets distributed?
The risk of a nuclear accident is small, but if something goes wrong at a nuclear power plant, harmful substances are released, including radioactive iodine. Iodine tablets have a protective effect. The iodine tablets were stored in a central place, but from this month on everyone who needs them will receive them. That saves valuable time in the event of an emergency.

How do iodine tablets work? Our body temporarily stores iodine in the thyroid gland. In a nuclear accident, radioactive substances, including radioactive iodine, can be released. If it gets into the thyroid gland, it can cause thyroid cancer years later. Taking iodine pills at the right time temporarily saturates the thyroid gland. Radioactive iodine can then no longer be absorbed and leaves the body through the urine. Read more.
