It is best to start the treatment by using a special lice shampoo. This kills the lice, so no new nits are laid.
Stubborn nits
Nits are more difficult to remove because they stick to the hair. If a nit is accidentally left in the hair, you run the risk of contracting lice again. It is important to comb the hair well with a special nit comb.
Special agent or conditioner?
There are special means to get the nits off more easily, but you can also use a regular conditioner. Do both work equally well?
Research
The University of Ghent investigated this. Researchers collected 605 hairs from 6 different children. Each hair had an egg stuck to it. They then tried to remove the nits and measured how much force was needed.
The outcome
Untreated nits were the most difficult to remove. No difference could be detected between the nits that were treated with special agents and nits that were treated with normal conditioner.
