Using your shopping bag more often is good for the environment, but it is wise to pay attention to hygiene. According to experts, you run a higher risk of food poisoning.
Most people also put raw meat and vegetables with soil in their shopping bag. Even if there is an extra packaging or bag around it, the bacteria can be transferred to other products. A bacteriologist from the University of Aberdeen even says that you should immediately throw away a bag in which you have carried raw meat.
Two tips
– Keep raw meat as far away as possible from unpackaged products that you eat immediately, such as fruit.
– It is best to choose a reusable bag that can be washed in the washing machine. However, the washing machine does not kill all bacteria, so it is wise to buy a new bag once in a while.
97 percent of people never wash reusable bags. Does your shopping bag need a wash?
