Attention coffee lovers! Drinking coffee is not only in your genes, it can even become an addiction…
Erasmus MC researchers examined more than 18,000 people and their coffee drinking behaviour † They discovered that genes determine the extent to which your liver can handle caffeine † They also found the specific gene that causes coffee consumption. The same gene also plays a role in other addictions, such as those to morphine, amphetamine and cocaine † Coffee addiction is a mild addiction.
Genetic Cause
So how much coffee you can drink depends on the extent to which your liver can process the caffeine in coffee † Your genes determine this breakdown process. The liver sees coffee as a potentially toxic, foreign substance † That is why the liver makes various proteins to process the caffeine, among other things. These proteins determine the amount of coffee that you can process and drink.

Coffee and Parkinson's
The genes involved in coffee processing also appear to be associated with the development of Parkinson's disease † Drinking coffee seems to protect you against this:but does the coffee prevent you from getting Parkinson's or do the genes that determine how much coffee you drink play a role in the development of Parkinson's? Follow-up study is needed to discover this connection.
