Research has shown that stress is not the culprit of preeclampsia. Too little exercise does not seem to increase the risk of preeclampsia.
Until now, it was always thought that stress and lack of exercise during pregnancy were partly responsible for pregnancy poisoning (also called preeclampsia). However, this is disproved by the research of Karlijn Vollebregt (affiliated with the University of Amsterdam) among pregnant women.
Preeclampsia
Pregnancy poisoning can occur during pregnancy and can have serious consequences for both mother and child. The condition is the number one cause of death among pregnant women in the Netherlands † Symptoms include high blood pressure and protein loss in the urine.
Early on in pregnancy there are differences between women who have poisoning of pregnancy . later on and women with an uncomplicated pregnancy. Vollebregt's research now shows that the main causes of preeclampsia are predisposition, high blood pressure and age to be. For example, women who become pregnant at a later age have a higher risk of preeclampsia.
Karlijn Vollebregt will receive his PhD today at the University of Amsterdam.
